Why this rank: Twenty-two suites in restored cave houses, some three hundred years old, on the cliffs above the Aegean a short walk from Oia. The hotel's own policies page accepts children under 16 only at the separate Perivolas Villa, so the hotel itself is for adults, with a spa, a gym and suites with private pools. Guests praise the infinity pool above the caldera, the candlelit restaurant in a former wine cellar and the calm away from Oia's crowds. The cave architecture, however, means few conventional windows.

How we chose and ordered the hotels

This is a country guide, so we spread it across Greece: we take at most two hotels from any one island or region. That leaves eighteen hotels on eleven islands and regions, four-star hotels alongside five-star ones. They are ordered by guest score, so the order shows how satisfied guests have been rather than which island will suit you. The guide to the islands below helps with that choice.

Each hotel had to say on its own website that it is adults-only. We used booking sites only to find the minimum age where the hotel's own pages gave none. To qualify, a hotel had to accept guests from 16 at the youngest or have an explicit adults-only policy for the whole hotel. Hotels that only set an age limit of 12, 13 or 14, and adults-only zones inside family hotels, do not count.

Where to stay in Greece: which island suits you?

The Cyclades have three of the hotels. Perivolas is on Santorini, on the caldera cliffs at Oia near the island's northern tip. Once in Mykonos stands above Ornos Beach, a few kilometres south of Mykonos Town and close to the airport. Mythic Paros is built into a hillside at Agia Irini on Paros. All three are hotels for the pool and the view rather than the beach.

Crete, Greece's largest island, has two at opposite ends of the north coast. Minos Palace has its own headland at Agios Nikolaos in the east, about an hour's drive from Heraklion airport. Domes Noruz is on the beach at Agioi Apostoloi, a few kilometres west of Chania.

Rhodes and Kos, in the Dodecanese, have two each. On Rhodes, Cabú is at Faliraki on the east coast and Lindos Blu above Vlycha Bay, just outside Lindos further south on the same coast. On Kos, Villa Coo is a town hotel within walking distance of the harbour and old town of Kos Town, while Blue Pearls sits on the beach outside the centre.

Samos, in the eastern Aegean, has two near Pythagorion on the south-east coast: Proteas Blu above a sheltered cove with two pebble beaches, and Casa Cook on Potokaki Beach beside the airport.

Corfu and Zakynthos, in the Ionian Sea, have two each. On Corfu, Domes Miramare is on the shore at Moraitika on the east coast, south of Corfu Town, and Atlantica Grand Mediterraneo on the hillside above Ermones on the west coast. On Zakynthos, Zante Maris and King Jason are both in the Tsilivi and Planos area north of Zakynthos Town, a short walk from the beach rather than on it.

Halkidiki, the three-fingered peninsula south-east of Thessaloniki, is the one mainland region on the list. Both hotels are on Kassandra, the westernmost finger: MERAVIA at Afytos and Domes Noruz at Chanioti, the livelier of the two. Thessaloniki airport is roughly 70 to 90 km away.

Skiathos, in the Sporades, has La Piscine Art Hotel, five minutes' walk from the centre of Skiathos Town. It is, however, adults-only from May to September only.

Why only two hotels per island?

A country list that took every strong adults-only hotel would be dominated by a handful of islands, so we cap it at two hotels per island or region. That cap leaves out good hotels in the places with the widest choice. Crete, Rhodes, Kos and Zakynthos therefore have their own, longer adults-only guides on Tripplo: Adults-only hotels in Crete, Adults-only hotels in Rhodes, Adults-only hotels in Kos and Adults-only hotels in Zakynthos.

A pattern worth knowing: adults-only does not mean the same thing at every Greek hotel. The age limit runs from 16 to 18, some hotels publish no exact age at all, and one is for adults only in summer. Check the conditions before you book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Twelve of the hotels set the limit at 16: Perivolas (whose separate villa takes children), Villa Coo, Once in Mykonos, Domes Noruz Chania, MERAVIA, Domes Noruz Kassandra, Proteas Blu, La Piscine, Domes Miramare, Casa Cook Samos, Mythic Paros and Atlantica Grand Mediterraneo. Lindos Blu takes guests from 17, and Zante Maris and Blue Pearls from 18. King Jason Zante, Cabú and Minos Palace call themselves adults-only without publishing an exact age; none of the three accepts children according to Booking. La Piscine on Skiathos is adults-only from May to September only.

For caldera views and Cycladic villages, Santorini, Mykonos and Paros have one hotel each. Crete and Rhodes suit those who want a large island with plenty to explore, while Kos Town works well for a walkable holiday. Samos is quieter, with two beach hotels near Pythagorion. Corfu and Zakynthos have greener Ionian landscapes, and Halkidiki's Kassandra peninsula has beach resorts within reach of Thessaloniki.

Blue Pearls on Kos, Domes Noruz Chania and Casa Cook Samos have direct access to the beach, and Domes Miramare on Corfu is on the shore, though the beach is pebbly. Lindos Blu has a private beach below the hotel, Minos Palace its own sandy cove and Proteas Blu two pebble beaches in its cove. MERAVIA and Domes Noruz Kassandra have beach areas of their own, and Atlantica's private beach at Ermones is reached by cable car or shuttle. Perivolas, Mythic Paros, La Piscine and Villa Coo have no beach of their own.

Every room at Domes Noruz Chania has a hot tub or plunge pool on its terrace. Perivolas, Zante Maris, Blue Pearls, Proteas Blu, Casa Cook Samos, MERAVIA and Atlantica Grand Mediterraneo have suites with private pools, as do some rooms at Once in Mykonos. At King Jason Zante the private pools are in the Island Suites, at Lindos Blu in the Private Pool Maisonettes, and at Domes Noruz Kassandra in the pool retreat suites.

This country list takes at most two hotels from each island or region, so that it covers Greece as a whole. Those four islands have more adults-only hotels than the cap allows, however, and each has its own, longer adults-only guide on Tripplo.
