Salzburgerhof
Zell am See–Kaprun, Austria
Best overallThe Salzburgerhof is a classic five-star house run by a family, in the middle of Zell am See… Its strengths are easy to list: a spa of more than 3,500 m², an indoor and an outdoor pool, a natural swimming pond in the garden and a private beach on the lake, 500 m away. Guests speak most warmly about the staff and the breakfast, and the location works in both seasons. In winter the hotel's own shuttle runs to the CityXpress and Schmittenhöhe valley stations, the CityXpress gondola is about 400 m away and there is a heated ski cellar with boot dryers. The weak points are smaller but recurring. On hot summer days the air conditioning struggles, half-board guests on longer stays find dinner repetitive, and value for money is where guests are most critical. Skiers who want a spa hotel near the lifts, and summer guests who come for the lake and golf, will be well looked after.
Why this position
Leads the ranking on hotel class (5★ to 4★), with guest scores close behind.

Berghotel Schmittenhöhe
Zell am See–Kaprun, Austria
Affordable luxuryBerghotel Schmittenhöhe is about the location… It stands at 2,000 metres beside the top station of the Schmittenhöhebahn, so in winter you can ski from the door after breakfast and in summer walk straight onto hiking trails, with views down to Zell am See. Guests praise the staff, the dinners and the rooms, renovated in 2018, and the spa with its saunas is often quiet. Dog owners feel welcome, and in a summer heatwave the altitude is a relief. Life on the summit has its rules. The hotel can only be reached by cable car, which runs during the day only, so evenings in town are not really an option and arrival times need planning. Some guests found the mattresses soft and the breakfast average, and the fitness room is small. Skiers and hikers who want to wake up on the mountain will love it; those who want restaurants on the doorstep should stay in town.
Why this position
Highest guest score of the 8 hotels we rank here: 9.3 from 1,014 reviews. A lower star class than #1, but guests rate it higher (9.3 to 8.6).

Tauern Spa Hotel & Therme
Zell am See–Kaprun, Austria
Spa & wellnessTauern Spa Hotel & Therme is built around water… The hotel is joined to a thermal bath complex with 16 pools in all, and guests also have a rooftop panorama pool, saunas and an open-air bath. They talk most about the scale of the spa, the views from the top-floor pool, the breakfast and the half-board dinners, and the large rooms with balconies facing the mountains. In summer it works as a base for hiking; in winter the ski bus takes guests to the MK Maiskogelbahn, about 1.5 km away, and on to the Kitzsteinhorn. The size has its downsides. Guests describe the building as a labyrinth, some bathrooms have a transparent glass door or a shower over the bath, and skiers cannot walk to the lift, while the morning bus can be full. Those who want long spa afternoons after skiing or hiking will be happy here; anyone looking for an intimate house close to the slopes should look elsewhere.
Why this position
A 4-star hotel scoring 9.2 from 2,127 reviews: the guest verdict outweighs the star class. Rests on more guest reviews than #2 (2,127 to 1,014), at a slightly lower score (9.2 to 9.3).

Superior Hotel Tirolerhof
Zell am See–Kaprun, Austria
Superior Hotel Tirolerhof wins guests over with its people… The family-run house sits in the centre of Zell am See, a few steps from the lake and on the edge of the pedestrian zone, and guests praise the warm welcome, the breakfast and the spacious, spotless rooms. Two spa areas, the Elements Panorama Spa on the top floor and the 1,000 m² Aquarena with its indoor pool and saunas, make it easy to unwind. In winter the CityXpress gondola is about 450 m away, and a hotel shuttle takes skiers to its valley station in the morning. The drawbacks are practical. The rooms have no air conditioning and can stay warm on summer nights, parking spaces are limited, and some guests missed a kettle in the room. Skiers who like to walk into town after a day on the Schmittenhöhe, and couples who want the lake on the doorstep, are well placed here.
Why this position
Among the three highest guest scores of the 8 hotels we rank here: 9.1 from 1,035 reviews. Sits behind #3 on both the score (9.1 to 9.2) and the sample it rests on (1,035 to 2,127 reviews).

CORE Kaprun
Zell am See–Kaprun, Austria
FamiliesCORE Kaprun wins guests over with its atmosphere… The renovated hotel feels warm and relaxed, guests praise the staff, and the breakfast and Austrian buffet dinners are generous. Saunas, two pools and a well-equipped gym make good use of a rainy afternoon, and the rooms are mostly large, with balconies facing the garden or the mountains. Families feel at home, and in winter the Maiskogelbahn is about 650 m away with the ski bus stop close by. The weak points lie in the details. Rooms have no fridge, kettle or minibar, some are smaller or older than the photos suggest, and the hot tub is only as warm as the pool. One family found the playroom small. Families and couples who want a friendly, comfortable base for skiing on the Maiskogel and Kitzsteinhorn, or for summer hiking with the included card, will feel at home here.
Why this position
Among the three highest guest scores of the 8 hotels we rank here: 9.1 from 288 reviews. The same guest score as #4 (9.1), on a smaller body of reviews (288 to 1,035).

Margarethenstein Boutique Hotel
Zell am See–Kaprun, Austria
Margarethenstein Boutique Hotel is for travellers who want a small, personal house rather than a resort… It sits in central Kaprun, so the gondola, shops and restaurants are all within a few minutes' walk, and the MK Maiskogelbahn is about 750 m away. Guests talk about the warm welcome, the owner's personal touch, the new suites with mountain views and the generous breakfast. Some suites have their own sauna, which skiers love after a day on the Maiskogel or the Kitzsteinhorn, and in summer the included card opens up the region for hiking. The weak points are small. Rooms can get very warm, housekeeping occasionally misses details, and a few guests wanted better TV reception and more pillow choice. Value for money is where guests are most critical. Couples who want a stylish, quiet base in the village centre will feel well looked after.
Why this position
Among the three highest guest scores of the 8 hotels we rank here: 9.1 from 264 reviews. Level with #5 on the guest score (9.1) and on the reviews behind it.

Hotel Barbarahof
Zell am See–Kaprun, Austria
Hotel Barbarahof suits guests who want space and quiet… It lies in a calm street near the centre of Kaprun, takes children only from the age of 10 and offers large rooms, many with mountain-view balconies. Guests praise the cleanliness, the breakfast and the Roman-style spa with its indoor pool. In winter the ski bus stops right outside, the MK Maiskogelbahn is about 1 km away and the ski room is well equipped. In summer the included Zell am See-Kaprun Card covers the lake lidos, the reservoirs and the cable cars. The weak points are details rather than the core. Some guests find the beds too soft, the gym equipment is dated, and small repairs or room temperature are not always dealt with quickly. Couples and adult groups looking for a calm base for skiing or hiking will be well served; families with young children will need to look elsewhere.
Why this position
Among the three highest guest scores of the 8 hotels we rank here: 9.1 from 259 reviews. Level with #6 on the guest score (9.1) and on the reviews behind it.

Revier Boutique Hotel Kaprun
Zell am See–Kaprun, Austria
Revier Boutique Hotel Kaprun feels new because it is… The renovated hotel on the Kitzsteinhornstraße has a modern, design-led style, and guests praise the spotless rooms, the balconies with views, the friendly staff and the breakfast. The wellness area has a sauna, a steam room and a hammam, and in summer an outdoor pool. In winter the ski bus stop is a short walk away, the MK Maiskogelbahn is about 1.3 km off, and skiers praise the ski room and boot dryers. The modern concept has some gaps. Rooms lack a kettle, minibar and other small comforts, some bathrooms are separated from the bedroom only by a curtain, and the app-based door system confuses some guests. There is no indoor pool, and the restaurant is not cheap. Couples and families who want a clean, contemporary base for skiing or hiking will be happy; those who like classic comforts in the room may prefer a more traditional hotel.
Why this position
Among the three highest guest scores of the 8 hotels we rank here: 9.1 from 227 reviews. Level with #7 on the guest score (9.1) and on the reviews behind it.
