Netherlands: which destination suits you?

Not every place suits every trip. Here is how the destinations differ, with the hotels we list in each and the guides that narrow the choice further.

Cities1

Amsterdam

Amsterdam

17 hotels

Canal-house hotels, museums and a compact centre that works on foot or by bike. A short city break; the best hotels are small, so book early for weekends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Amsterdam is the natural first visit, with canals, museums and the broadest range of hotels. The Hague and Utrecht make calmer city breaks, each within an hour of Amsterdam by train. Groningen in the north and Maastricht in the south have lively, compact centres and a pace of their own. For quiet days in nature, choose a country estate in the Veluwe or Drenthe, where walks start at the hotel door.

Spring is popular: the bulb fields flower from roughly late March into May, and around King's Day on 27 April Amsterdam fills up, so book early. Summer brings long evenings and busy terraces along the canals, and in late summer the heather turns the Veluwe purple. Autumn and winter are quieter and often better value, though grey and damp, and in December the cities are lit up for the festive season.

From the UK there are frequent flights to Schiphol, and Eurostar runs direct trains from London to Amsterdam. Within the country distances are short: Utrecht and The Hague are under an hour from Amsterdam by train, while Groningen and Maastricht take roughly two to two and a half hours. City hotels are easy to reach on foot or by tram, but for the Veluwe, Drenthe and the countryside near Maastricht a car makes life easier.

They are standalone icons rather than city destinations: Hotel Des Indes in The Hague and Central Park Voorburg on its edge, Grand Hotel Karel V in Utrecht, Prinsenhof in Groningen, Het Arresthuis in a former prison in Roermond and Van Oys in the countryside south of Maastricht. For nature, there is Châteauhotel De Havixhorst in Drenthe, and Landgoed Het Roode Koper and De Echoput in the Veluwe forests. Most pair easily with a few days in Amsterdam.

The Netherlands uses the euro. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and some cafés and shops no longer take cash at all, so a card is the safer choice. Service is included in restaurant bills and tipping is not expected, although many people round up or leave around five to ten per cent for good service. In hotels, a small tip for housekeeping or the concierge is a kind gesture rather than an obligation.

Many occupy buildings that began life as something else: 17th-century canal houses, a former town hall, a prison, a medieval complex with breakfast served in a former church, or country estates with English gardens. Service tends to be warm but informal and direct rather than ceremonious, and bikes for guests are common. The restaurant often matters as much as the room, especially in the country houses, where dinner is part of the reason to stay.
