Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on your plans. The north around Grand Baie has calm water, the widest choice of restaurants and boat trips to the small northern islands, but also the most traffic. The east around Belle Mare has long white beaches and big resorts, though it is windier in the southern winter. Le Morne in the south-west has the most dramatic scenery and the most seclusion, and Flic en Flac on the west coast has sunsets and a slower pace.

Yes, and many hotels are set up for couples. Every villa at Shanti Maurice Resort & Spa in Bel Ombre and at Maradiva Villas Resort and Spa in Flic en Flac has a private pool, and some villas at LUX* Grand Gaube Resort & Villas do too. For a hotel without children, Paradise Cove Boutique Hotel and La Maison 20 Degrés Sud in the north, and SALT of Palmar and Seasense Boutique Hotel & Spa in the east, are adults-only.

The reef-protected lagoons are usually calm and shallow near the shore, which suits younger children, particularly in the north and west. The Oberoi at Turtle Bay has a kids club, and LUX* Belle Mare Resort & Villas and Constance Le Chaland IKO Mauritius have family and interconnecting rooms. Check each hotel's children's activities before booking, and leave out the adults-only hotels. Blue Bay, close to the airport, keeps the transfer short after a long flight.

Among the hotels on Tripplo, Heritage Awali in Bel Ombre is sold as all-inclusive: meals and drinks are part of the rate, and guests have access to the golf club. At most other resorts the board depends on the package you book, from breakfast only to half board, full board or all-inclusive. Read what a package covers before you choose, as some leave out certain restaurants or drinks.

The months between the seasons, roughly April to May and October to December, are often the most pleasant, with warm water and less wind and rain. From June to September the southern winter brings cooler days and stronger trade winds, especially on the east and south coasts; this is kitesurfing season at Le Morne, while the north and west are more sheltered. The summer is hot and humid, and cyclones can occur roughly from January to March.

Flights land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in the south-east of the island. There are non-stop flights from London and Paris, or you can change in a hub such as Dubai. Hotel transfers and taxis take about an hour to most coasts and a little longer to the north, while Blue Bay is close to the airport. Traffic drives on the left, and many visitors use taxis or hotel drivers rather than hiring a car.
