Frequently Asked Questions

The west coast faces the sunset and lies in the lee of the south-east trade winds, which blow hardest from June to September. That makes Flic en Flac usually calmer and drier than Belle Mare or the south coast in the southern winter. All the hotels at Wolmar look west, and at the Hilton you can watch the sun go down from the Vista Bar. In exchange, evenings are quieter than in Grand Baie in the north.

Flic en Flac Beach is long, with white sand and a lagoon held in by the reef, so the water near the shore is usually calm. Guests at La Pirogue, Sands Suites Resort & Spa and the Hilton praise the water sports on the lagoon, and at Sands they are free. Parts of the beach at Maradiva have sharp stones, so water shoes help there. Some guests found the choice of snorkelling trips from Sugar Beach limited.

Maradiva Villas Resort and Spa at Wolmar is an all-villa resort, and each of its 64 villas has its own temperature-controlled pool, set in large gardens along 750 metres of beach. Guests praise the privacy, the size of the villas and the sea views, though some find the restaurants weaker than the villas. Of the hotels on this page, Maradiva is the one built around private pools, and it suits honeymooners who want space and quiet.

As far as we know, none of the hotels here is sold as all-inclusive; board depends on the package you book. Guests mention half board at La Pirogue and Sugar Beach and dinner included at the Hilton. Drinks usually cost extra, even at the Hilton, and at Sugar Beach meals are expensive without half or full board. Sands Suites Resort & Spa runs a dinner buffet with a different theme each night. Check what a package covers before you book.

Flights land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in the south-east of the island, and the drive across to Flic en Flac takes roughly an hour, depending on traffic. Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa and Maradiva Villas Resort and Spa have an airport shuttle, and Sugar Beach can arrange one at an extra charge. Most visitors use a hotel transfer or a taxi; if you hire a car, traffic drives on the left.

April to May and October to December are often the most pleasant months, with warm water and less rain. From June to September the southern winter is cooler, but the west coast is sheltered from the trade winds, so Flic en Flac stays calmer than the east and south coasts, although evenings can feel cool. From January to March it is hot and humid, with more rain and a risk of cyclones.

The area is quiet, and some guests find there is less going on in Flic en Flac in the evening than they expected. For day trips, Tamarin and Black River are a short drive south, with boat trips along the coast, and the Casela nature park lies just inland. The forests and viewpoints of Black River Gorges National Park suit hikers, and Le Morne is further down the south-west coast.
