The Residence Maldives
Southern Atolls, Maldives
Private poolThe Residence Maldives is built around calm… It sits on Falhumaafushi in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, and guests keep returning to the same words: serene, immaculate and spacious. Villas have high ceilings, large windows, a private terrace and a bathroom with a stand-alone tub, and the larger ones add a private pool; guests who stayed in the overwater pool villas describe them as roomy and beautiful. The staff draw the warmest praise of all, for being friendly, proactive and always ready to help, and some guests value having two islands to explore. The main trade-off is getting there. From Malé there is an onward flight of about an hour, so the journey needs some patience. Private pools are limited to the larger villas, and one guest noticed that the meat was not always fresh. For couples who want a quiet island and a spacious villa, the distance tends to feel worth it.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #2 (66 to 31), at a slightly lower score (9.5 to 9.8).

ROBINSON MALDIVES - Adults only
Southern Atolls, Maldives
ROBINSON MALDIVES - Adults only suits couples and friends who want a Maldives island without children around… The resort sits on Funamadua in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, and its bungalows and villas come with spa tubs, terraces and outdoor rain showers; guests single out the overwater rooms in particular. Days can be as active or as slow as you like, with free snorkelling equipment, an outdoor pool, a spa and a fitness programme that includes aqua gym and aerobics at no charge. Guests praise the staff, the food and how easy everything feels. The trade-offs are modest. The airport shuttle is a paid service, so build the transfer into your plans. There is a wish for more organised snorkelling and diving, and with two restaurants the dining is focused rather than broad. Families will need to look elsewhere, as the resort is for adults only. For a calm, sociable stay with sport close at hand, it is an easy fit.
Why this position
The same guest score as #4 (9.5), on a smaller body of reviews (22 to 36).

Sun Siyam Vilu Reef
Southern Atolls, Maldives
Sun Siyam Vilu Reef suits travellers who want a classic Maldives island stay without much fuss… The resort sits on Meedhuffushi in Dhaalu Atoll, a 35-minute seaplane ride away, and its air-conditioned, wooden-floored villas look over the beach or the ocean. Guests return to the same points: beautiful beaches, a house reef close to the hotel that is good for snorkelling, a diving centre, food they enjoy in every restaurant and staff they describe as kind and responsive. Some have come back for a second stay. The trade-offs are modest, however. Wi-Fi is weak in some parts of the island, and a few beach villas overlook a neighbouring local residential island rather than open water, so it is worth asking for an ocean view. Evenings are quiet and some guests would have liked more entertainment, while service at the pool can be slow. Couples and snorkellers who want calm days by the water will feel at home here.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #5 (547 to 22), at a slightly lower score (9.2 to 9.5).

Sun Siyam Iru Veli
Southern Atolls, Maldives
All inclusiveSun Siyam Iru Veli is built for couples who want everything taken care of… The five-star resort in Dhaalu Atoll runs on a premium all-inclusive basis, with the Sun Aqua Signature meal plan and a dine-around option, and every villa, whether on the beach or over the water, has its own private pool. An over-water spa, a fitness centre, a bar and an airport shuttle round things off. Honeymooners in particular write warmly about their stay: guests praise the stunning villas, the warm and attentive service and a dedicated ambassador who keeps in touch throughout, as well as a reef in the lagoon with plenty of fish and the massages at the spa. The weaker points are minor, however. One guest felt the water villas need some renovation, another found the lagoon less picture-perfect than others in the Maldives, and the buffet could label its dishes more clearly. Couples looking for a romantic escape where every detail is handled for them will find it a natural fit.
Why this position
The same guest score as #6 (9.2), on a smaller body of reviews (389 to 547).

Scores higher than #7 (10.0 to 9.2), on a smaller body of reviews (1 to 389).

The Residence Maldives at Dhigurah
Southern Atolls, Maldives
The Residence Maldives at Dhigurah suits travellers who want both a beach and something to explore beneath the water… The resort sits on Dhigurah in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, and guests describe the island as beautiful, well sized and never crowded, with facilities spread across two islands and bicycles for getting around. The house reef lies close to the beach and earns glowing praise from snorkellers and divers. Guests also speak warmly about the food and drink, the well set-up villas and staff who go out of their way to help, while the spa adds a sauna, a steam room and beauty services. The trade-offs start with the journey. The transfer from Malé is long once waiting times are added, so build in some slack. Under the water villas the sea can get shallow at low tide, and some guests found the most popular restaurants hard to book. For reef lovers and couples happy to travel a little further, it is a rewarding choice.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #8 (91 to 1), at a slightly lower score (8.7 to 10.0).

Angsana Velavaru
Southern Atolls, Maldives
Angsana Velavaru suits families and couples who want a full-service island with the water always close by… The resort sits on Velavaru Island, known as Turtle Island, in Dhaalu Atoll, a 45-minute seaplane ride from Malé, and its beachfront and water villas come with private pools. Three restaurants, two pools, a spa, a fitness centre and indoor and outdoor kids' clubs fill the days. Guests praise the welcoming, attentive staff above all, followed by the clear turquoise water, the reefs, food that changes from evening to evening and a resort they describe as clean and well managed. The criticism is mild but consistent, however. Several guests feel some rooms could use touching up, pointing to details such as outdated lamp shades and curtains. The shore is shallow at low tide, which matters if you like to swim straight off the beach, and the odd reviewer found individual staff less helpful than the rest. Families and couples who value service over brand-new interiors will enjoy their stay.
Why this position
Guests rate it above #9 (8.8 to 8.7) and on more reviews (417 to 91).

Kandima Maldives
Southern Atolls, Maldives
Kandima Maldives is for travellers who want a Maldives island with plenty going on… It spreads across a large island in Dhaalu Atoll, a 45-minute flight from Malé and then a 20-minute boat ride, and guests describe it as modern, beautiful and spotlessly kept. Days can fill up with water sports, tennis and volleyball, the marine biology centre, the art studio or a cooking class, and guests mention parties and recent additions such as a play space and a resort app. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and helpful, and the beach villas with a pool and sunset view get special praise. The weaker points are practical. Several guests found the buffet short on variety and felt the desserts could be better. Transfers for the domestic flight run at limited times, and getting around the island can mean waiting for a buggy. For couples, friends and active travellers who value choice over seclusion, it is a lively and well-run base.
Why this position
The largest body of guest feedback on this page: 1,214 reviews, averaging 8.7. Rests on more guest reviews than #10 (1,214 to 417), at a slightly lower score (8.7 to 8.8).
