Royal Island Resort Maldives
Baa Atoll, Maldives
Best overallRoyal Island Resort Maldives is a calm island stay where the people make the difference… The resort sits on Horubadhoo in Baa Atoll, with white sandy beaches, a house reef that guests rate highly and wooden villas that each have a private patio facing the Indian Ocean. Guests talk most about the kindness of the staff, the homely feel and the varied buffet, and many say they would come back. Active days are easy to fill, with diving trips, sunset cruises, water skiing, kitesurfing, tennis and a gym. The drawbacks are modest. Tours are expensive, even if guests who took them found them worthwhile, and villas on the windy side of the island can be noisy from the waves. A few buffet dishes struck some guests as bland. Couples, snorkellers and divers who want a friendly, well-run island will feel at home; those who plan many paid excursions should factor that in.

Dusit Thani Maldives
Baa Atoll, Maldives
Dusit Thani Maldives is built around the water… Mudhdhoo Island sits in Baa Atoll's UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is ringed by a 360-degree house reef, so guests can snorkel straight from the beach and describe marine life wherever they look, with manta ray sites close by. On land there are 94 modern Thai-style villas and residences, a large infinity pool, three restaurants, a tree-top spa and bicycles for getting around. Guests praise the staff and the food just as often as the reef. The trade-offs are practical. This is a family-friendly island, and guests mention plenty of lively children, which will not suit everyone hoping for quiet. Excursions are costly and the stay as a whole feels pricey to some, and the villas come without twin beds. Snorkellers, couples and families who want the reef on the doorstep will find a lot to love; anyone after a quiet retreat without children may prefer another island.
Why this position
Guests rate it above #7 (9.4 to 9.2) and on more reviews (168 to 58).

Finolhu, a Seaside Collection Resort
Baa Atoll, Maldives
Finolhu, a Seaside Collection Resort is a small island in Baa Atoll where every villa sits either on the beach or over the ocean, and more than half have their own pool… Guests describe the island as picturesque and carefully kept, and they speak warmly about staff who look after them from the moment they arrive. Families value the relaxed mood and the activities for children, while others mention yoga twice a day, water sports equipment and a varied breakfast. The trade-offs come with the remote setting. Guests note that the journey from Malé takes time, and the island has its own limits: bicycles are kept for the staff, and on a longer stay some found the menus repetitive and dining costly. For families and couples who want a well-run villa by the water and plenty to do without leaving the island, it is a strong fit; travellers who want variety at mealtimes may notice the small scale.
Why this position
Scores higher than #8 (9.5 to 9.4), on a smaller body of reviews (48 to 168).

The Nautilus Maldives
Baa Atoll, Maldives
DesignThe Nautilus Maldives is built around privacy… The resort occupies its own island in Baa Atoll's UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, ringed by coral reefs and sandy beaches, with Hanifaru Bay and its manta rays and whale sharks close by. There are only 26 houses and residences, each in an organic, boho-chic style and each with direct access to the beach or the lagoon. Guests describe the island as picture-perfect, praise the butler service and the food, and note that the small scale makes it easy to have meals and plans adapted to them. The trade-offs are calm ones. One guest found the prices high, and the island is quiet by design, so those who want a buzzing bar scene will find little of it here. Feedback is still limited, though what there is has been consistently positive. Couples looking for seclusion and personal attention are well matched; travellers on a tighter budget or after nightlife are better served elsewhere.
Why this position
Sits behind #9 on both the score (9.2 to 9.5) and the sample it rests on (23 to 48 reviews).

The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort
Baa Atoll, Maldives
The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort is built around its villas and its service… Guests describe the overwater villas as spacious, stylish and well maintained, with views that set the tone for the stay, and the rooms come with sea views, terraces and private pools. Breakfast is served in an open restaurant facing the sea, and the spa, sauna and steam room offer a change of pace from the water. Above all, guests speak about the staff, who go out of their way to look after them. That attentiveness is also where opinions split: a few guests found the service too present during meals. Water activities and other extras are paid separately, and some guests found them expensive, and others wished the island had more to do. For couples who want a well-kept villa over the water and personal service, it fits well; travellers who want lots of activity included will find the resort quieter.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #10 (25 to 23), at a slightly lower score (8.9 to 9.2).

Avani Plus Fares Maldives Resort
Baa Atoll, Maldives
Avani Plus Fares Maldives Resort is a beachfront resort on Fares Island in Baa Atoll, and guests keep coming back to the same two things: the beach and the water… Villas stand right by the sand, and the snorkelling is praised for its marine life. Guests describe the rooms as new and well equipped and the resort layout as beautifully designed, and several mention a personal host who looked after them from the start. An infinity pool, a spa, tennis and yoga classes fill the time between swims. The drawbacks are modest but worth knowing. Some guests found the dinner choice limited, a few met rushed waiters or uneven room service, and one noticed planes taking off and landing nearby. For couples and snorkellers who want to spend their days by the sea and in it, it is an easy fit; travellers who like to vary their evenings across many restaurants may find the options narrow.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #11 (128 to 25), at a slightly lower score (8.8 to 8.9).
