Conrad Athens The Ilisian
Athens, Greece
Conrad Athens The Ilisian is a city hotel that behaves like a resort… Freshly refurbished, it stands on Vasilissis Sofias in Ilisia, a short walk from the Athens Concert Hall and about 1.5 km from Syntagma, yet its lush garden, year-round outdoor pool and indoor pool make it easy to forget the traffic outside. Guests warm to the mid-century design, the comfortable rooms and the staff, who are described as friendly, attentive and quick to help, and the spa and gym add a reason to stay in during the hottest hours. The trade-offs are mostly about money and timing. The hotel's restaurants are considered very expensive, breakfast does not please everyone, and one family found that children could not swim after 7 pm. For couples and city-break travellers who want a pool and garden to return to after the Acropolis, it is a calm, polished base; those who plan to eat every meal in-house should, however, budget accordingly.
Why this position
Highest guest score of the 18 hotels we rank here: 9.5 from 162 reviews. Scores higher than #7 (9.5 to 9.2), on a smaller body of reviews (162 to 4,253).

Hellenic Vibes Smart Hotel
Athens, Greece
Hellenic Vibes Smart Hotel is for travellers who want central Athens at the door… It stands on Agia Irini square where Agias Eirinis meets Ermou, so Monastiraki, Plaka, the shops of Ermou and the Acropolis are all walked to, and the metro is close by. The building is recent and the rooms are modern, with lighting and other functions run from an app, and guests speak warmly about the staff and about a breakfast that includes omelettes cooked to order, fresh pastries and fresh juice. Despite the lively surroundings, the rooms are described as quiet. The compromises come with the compact city-centre setting. Some rooms look onto a shop or a neighbouring kitchen rather than the square, storage is scarce and a few guests found the beds firm. There is no pool, spa or gym, and the breakfast, while liked by most, seemed ordinary to a few. For a city break spent mostly out exploring, however, the location and the fresh, well-run rooms are hard to fault.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #8 (2,250 to 162), at a slightly lower score (9.2 to 9.5).

One&Only Aesthesis, Athens
Athens, Greece
Private poolOne&Only Aesthesis, Athens is for travellers who want a beach resort without leaving the capital behind… It sits on Leoforos Poseidonos in Glyfada, on the Athens Riviera, with its own beach area a few steps from Asteras Beach and Glyfada Marina close by. Accommodation is villa-style: bungalows in landscaped gardens, some with a private pool, and guests describe the whole place as a work of art. Service is personal from check-in onwards, the spa and pools fill the days, and families single out the kids' club. The trade-offs are mostly about money. Food and drink are expensive, and some guests felt the service, good as it is, did not quite match the cost. Not every bungalow has a sea view, buggies ferry guests around the large grounds, and on some evenings music from nearby venues carried into the resort. Couples and families who want a polished resort a drive from the Acropolis will find it hard to leave; anyone after a small, quiet hotel in central Athens should look elsewhere.
Why this position
The same guest score as #9 (9.2), on a smaller body of reviews (251 to 2,250).

Electra Metropolis
Athens, Greece
Electra Metropolis is a hotel for seeing Athens on foot… It stands on Mitropoleos, about 200 metres from Syntagma Square, with Plaka a 10-minute walk away and Monastiraki and the Acropolis close enough to reach before breakfast. Guests rarely mention anything before the location, and the rooftop comes next: the top-floor restaurant and the M Bar look straight at the Acropolis, the small pool shares the outlook, and breakfast is served up there with the same view. Rooms are described as spacious, spotless and comfortable, and the staff as professional and warm. The trade-offs are those of a busy city hotel. With ten floors and lifts that fill quickly, guests report waiting at peak times. Drinks on the rooftop cost more than in the streets below, and a few guests found the breakfast buffet narrower than its reputation. Travellers who want a central base with a view will be well served; anyone after a large pool and a resort pace should look to the Athens Riviera instead.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #10 (5,362 to 251), at a slightly lower score (9.1 to 9.2).

Perianth Hotel, a Member of Design Hotels
Athens, Greece
Perianth Hotel, a Member of Design Hotels is for travellers who want Athens at the door… The hotel sits on a side street a five-minute walk from Monastiraki Square and the Ermou shopping street, and guests name the location before anything else. Inside, the rooms are large and very clean, with a retro-style decor, black marble bathrooms and, in some suites, a balcony that faces the Acropolis. The staff draw warm words for arranging transfers, recommending restaurants, and the buffet breakfast is a reliable start to the day. The trade-offs follow from the setting. The surrounding streets are lively late into the evening, so some guests heard café and street noise at night. Balconies, where there are any, are small, and there is no pool to cool off in after a hot day of sightseeing. For a design-minded couple or a city-break traveller who plans to walk everywhere, the hotel is a well-run base; those who want quiet nights or a swim are better served elsewhere.
Why this position
The same guest score as #11 (9.1), on a smaller body of reviews (685 to 5,362).

xenodocheio Milos
Athens, Greece
xenodocheio Milos is a hotel for travellers who want central Athens on foot and a calm, polished room to come back to… It stands on Kolokotroni Street, 300 metres from Syntagma Square and three minutes from Ermou Street, so the Acropolis Museum and the Ancient Agora are easy to reach without transport. Guests return again and again to the same points: staff who are warm, welcoming and quick to help; housekeeping that several describe as the most thorough they have seen; and rooms where the design and materials are clearly thought through. The trade-offs are those of a boutique hotel in the city centre. There is a terrace but no pool or rooftop bar, which some guests missed. The Greek seafood restaurant draws praise for its cooking, but both dinner and breakfast cost well above the surrounding streets, and a few guests heard some noise despite the soundproofed rooms. For couples and city-break travellers who put design, service and location ahead of resort facilities, it fits very well.
Why this position
Level with #12 on the guest score (9.1) and on the reviews behind it.

AthensWas Design Hotel
Athens, Greece
AthensWas Design Hotel is for travellers who want Athens' ancient heart at the door… It stands on Dionysiou Areopagitou, the pedestrian street that curves beneath the Acropolis, with the Acropolis Museum opposite, the Temple of Olympian Zeus a few steps away and Acropolis metro station 160 metres from the entrance. Guests return again and again to the location, but they also praise the staff, the large modern rooms with their furnished verandas and the rooftop restaurant Sense, where breakfast and dinner come with the Acropolis in view. The trade-offs are those of a city design hotel. There is no pool or spa, only a fitness room, so this is a base for sightseeing rather than a place to spend the afternoon. The restrained modernist interiors strike a few guests as a little cool, breakfast gets the odd poor report, and rooms on the street side hear the promenade. For couples and culture-focused travellers who want to walk everywhere, however, it is a calm and well-run choice.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #13 (733 to 590), at a slightly lower score (9.0 to 9.1).

Coco-mat Athens BC
Athens, Greece
Coco-mat Athens BC is built around one idea: sleeping well a short walk from the Acropolis… The hotel stands on Falirou Street in Koukaki, less than 1 km from the hill and a few minutes from the Acropolis Museum, and guests describe walking to Plaka, Syntagma and the main sights without once needing a taxi. The beds are Coco-Mat's own, made from natural materials, and the modern building keeps the rooms quiet. Breakfast and staff draw the warmest comments, and a spa with sauna, hammam and steam room rounds off a day on foot. The compromises are modest but real. Some rooms are small for a five-star hotel, balconies on some sides face tired neighbouring buildings rather than the Acropolis, and the rooftop pool is not always open. The firm natural mattresses divide opinion too. For sightseers who want a calm, well-run base within walking distance of everything, the hotel does its job; those who want a big room or a reliable pool should look elsewhere.
Why this position
Guests rate it above #14 (9.0 to 9.0) and on more reviews (2,125 to 733).

NYX Esperia Palace Hotel Athens by Leonardo Hotels
Athens, Greece
NYX Esperia Palace Hotel Athens by Leonardo Hotels is a hotel for travellers who want central Athens at the door and a scene to come back to… It stands on Stadiou, 500 metres from Syntagma Square and a short walk from Ermou Street, the metro and the Acropolis, so most sightseeing happens on foot. The rooftop pool with the Acropolis in view is what guests talk about most, followed by the staff, the breakfast buffet and the bold design that runs through the bars and rooms. Beds and pillows get particular praise. The trade-offs are those of a lively hotel on a busy street. Lower floors hear traffic at night and the soundproofing is not complete, so a high floor matters. Rooms are compact, which some guests weighed against the rate, and pool time has to be booked, with neither pool opening before 10 am. For a stylish city break with a rooftop view it works well; for a large, quiet room, look elsewhere.
Why this position
The largest body of guest feedback on this page: 5,623 reviews, averaging 9.0. Guests rate it above #15 (9.0 to 9.0) and on more reviews (5,623 to 2,125).

King George, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Athens
Athens, Greece
King George, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Athens stands on Syntagma Square, between the Parliament and Voukourestiou Street, and the Acropolis, Plaka and the shops are a short walk from the door… Guests mention the location before anything else, followed closely by the staff, described as warm and attentive, and by Tudor Hall on the seventh floor, where dinner comes with a view across the rooftops to the Acropolis. Breakfast earns steady praise, and the rooms, with their hand-picked furniture and chandeliers, are called comfortable and beautifully kept. The trade-offs are those of a historic building in the centre. There is no pool, courtyard-facing rooms are quiet but short on daylight, and several guests felt the rates were high for the size of the room. The lifts are small and busy, and sound can carry between rooms. For travellers who want to step straight into the old city, it is a polished and well-run base; those who want a pool are better served on the Athens Riviera.
Why this position
Sits behind #16 on both the score (8.9 to 9.0) and the sample it rests on (287 to 5,623 reviews).

The Margi
Athens, Greece
Peace and quietThe Margi is for travellers who want the Athens Riviera without a big resort… It is a small five-star hotel among pine trees in Vouliagmeni, a short walk from the beach, with two pools, a spa and a pool area that guests praise again and again. The staff are the most praised part of a stay, followed by breakfast by the pool and the food: Patio builds its Mediterranean tasting menus around produce from its own farm, and GiO serves Italian cooking. The trade-offs are real but modest. Rooms overlooking the pool pick up noise from the poolside restaurant late in the evening, some rooms and bathrooms are small for the price, and both rooms and dining are expensive. The beach is a walk away rather than at the door, and a few nearby buildings are run down. Couples who value service, food and calm will find an intimate, well-run base; families who want a beach at their feet should look at a seafront resort instead.
Why this position
Guests rate it above #17 (8.9 to 8.9) and on more reviews (625 to 287).

How we chose these hotels
At our latest review (August 2026) the properties listed above were measured against the same standard: sustained guest scores on both Booking.com and Google (weighted by how many reviews sit behind them), five-star class or an equivalent premium level, a genuinely first-rate location, and facilities that set the hotel apart.
As a guideline we look for around 8.5 or higher on Booking.com, but no single number decides on its own. When the sources disagree, the broader evidence wins. Guest scores on this page update continuously, and the selection is re-reviewed at regular intervals. The full standard is described in how we choose hotels.
