Relais & Châteaux Hotel Orfila
Madrid, Spain
Relais & Châteaux Hotel Orfila suits travellers who want Madrid to feel calm and personal… The hotel fills a 19th-century palace on a quiet street in Chamberí, yet the Alonso Martínez and Colón metro stations are less than 200 metres away, so the centre is never far. Guests return to the same points: old-world charm, spacious rooms with antique furniture, hospitality that starts the moment they arrive and small gestures such as a foot cream left at turndown. The restaurant has a garden, and the tea room and the bar suit slower afternoons. The trade-off is scale. This is a small hotel without a pool or a spa, and the traditional décor will feel dated to anyone who prefers clean, modern lines. Couples and travellers who value quiet, character and attentive service will find a refined base here; those who want resort-style facilities in the city are better served elsewhere.
Why this position
Highest guest score of the 19 hotels we rank here: 9.4 from 479 reviews. Scores higher than #3 (9.4 to 9.3), on a smaller body of reviews (479 to 1,152).

Four Seasons Hotel Madrid
Madrid, Spain
Spa & wellnessFour Seasons Hotel Madrid in Madrid offers luxurious rooms with city or inner courtyard views, air-conditioning, and modern amenities. Each room includes a private bathroom, minibar, and free WiFi…
Why this position
Among the three highest guest scores of the 19 hotels we rank here: 9.3 from 594 reviews. Rests on more guest reviews than #4 (594 to 479), at a slightly lower score (9.3 to 9.4).

VP Plaza España Design
Madrid, Spain
VP Plaza España Design is a hotel for travellers who want the centre of Madrid right outside the door… It faces Plaza de España, Gran Vía is about a minute's walk away, and its rooms and suites have a calm, contemporary design. The roof is the hotel's signature, with an outdoor pool, a restaurant and a bar, and there is also a spa and wellness area and a fitness centre. Guests speak most warmly about the location, the spotless rooms and the helpful staff, and like having plenty of restaurants and shops close by. The criticisms are few and isolated. One guest found the soundproofing lacking, another had very poor service at the rooftop restaurant, and a third found the pool staff less friendly than the rest of the team. Travellers who want a central, design-led base with a rooftop pool will find a lot to like; light sleepers should raise their needs when they book.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #5 (1,390 to 594), at a slightly lower score (9.2 to 9.3).

Brach Madrid - Evok Collection
Madrid, Spain
Brach Madrid - Evok Collection is for travellers who want to be in the thick of the city and still come back to somewhere calm… It stands on Gran Vía in the centre of Madrid, and guests rate the location highly. What they talk about most is the design: impeccable interiors, luxurious materials and an artistic, carefully detailed atmosphere that carries into the rooms, with comfortable beds and spacious wardrobes. The staff are described as welcoming, and the concierge team draws particular praise. A spa with a sauna, an indoor pool, a fitness room and yoga classes round out the stay. The wellness area has its limits. The sauna and steam room close early, the pool is indoors, and one guest found a massage below expectations. Opinions on breakfast and on the daily restocking of rooms are also mixed. Design-minded travellers who want a central base with a pool will be happy here; anyone planning long evening spa sessions should check the opening hours first.
Why this position
Among the three highest guest scores of the 19 hotels we rank here: 9.3 from 336 reviews. Scores higher than #6 (9.3 to 9.2), on a smaller body of reviews (336 to 1,390).

Hotel Montera Madrid, Curio Collection By Hilton
Madrid, Spain
Hotel Montera Madrid, Curio Collection By Hilton is for travellers who want the city on the doorstep… It stands on Calle Montera in the centre of Madrid, close to popular attractions, and location is what guests mention first and most often. The hotel itself is modern, clean and well designed, and guests talk about beautiful rooms, a good night's sleep and staff who are friendly and helpful. Up on the roof there is a swimming pool and a sun terrace, and two restaurants, a bar and a well-regarded breakfast mean you do not have to leave the building to eat well. The rooftop is also where the compromises show. The pool is small, and food prices up there struck one guest as very high. Balconies and baths are only found in some rooms, so book carefully if either matters. Travellers who want a stylish, central base for a city break will find a lot to like; anyone after a large pool should look elsewhere.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #7 (686 to 336), at a slightly lower score (9.2 to 9.3).

Gran Hotel Inglés - The Leading Hotels of the World
Madrid, Spain
BoutiqueGran Hotel Inglés - The Leading Hotels of the World is a hotel for travellers who want to see Madrid on foot… It occupies a 19th-century building in the Barrio de las Letras, 300 metres from Puerta del Sol and about 600 metres from the main museums, and its rooms recall the building's original art deco style. Guests speak most warmly about the staff, who come across as attentive and knowledgeable, and about the breakfast, the comfortable rooms and a location that puts much of the centre within easy reach. The trade-offs are modest but worth knowing. The hotel stands on a narrow street, and one guest's stay coincided with building work directly opposite, so it is worth asking about this when you book. There is a spa and wellness centre and a fitness centre, but no pool is listed. Travellers who value service and a central base will find a well-run, welcoming hotel; those who want resort-style facilities are better served elsewhere.
Why this position
Level with #8 on the guest score (9.2) and on the reviews behind it.

UMusic Hotel Madrid
Madrid, Spain
UMusic Hotel Madrid is a hotel for travellers who want the old centre on the doorstep and a pool to come back to… Puerta del Sol is two minutes away on foot and Plaza Mayor three, and the hotel adds a seasonal outdoor pool, a pool bar and a sun terrace to its restaurant, bar and coffee shop. Guests speak most warmly about the location, the breakfast and the decor, describe a well-executed concept with an enjoyable atmosphere, and mention comfortable beds and quiet rooms. The drawbacks are small. One guest waited almost half an hour for breakfast, the gym is small if functional, and the pool is open only in season, so a stay out of season is a city break rather than a pool break. Travellers who want a central, stylish base for exploring on foot will be well looked after; keen gym-goers may want more equipment.
Why this position
The largest body of guest feedback on this page: 3,353 reviews, averaging 9.1. Rests on more guest reviews than #9 (3,353 to 680), at a slightly lower score (9.1 to 9.2).

NH Collection Madrid Palacio de Tepa
Madrid, Spain
NH Collection Madrid Palacio de Tepa suits travellers who want a handsome historic base in the centre of Madrid… The hotel fills a restored 19th-century Neoclassical palace, with remains of an old canal system still visible inside, and Puerta del Sol is only 350 metres away, so much of the old centre is within walking distance. Guests speak most warmly about the location, the breakfast with its wide choice, the comfortable beds and the friendly staff, and several describe the building itself as beautiful. The trade-offs are modest but worth knowing. The facilities centre on the rooms, the restaurant, the bar and a 24-hour gym, which guests have found very small for a five-star hotel, and there is no pool or spa. Some rooms face inward rather than onto the street. Those who spend their days out exploring the city will find a comfortable, well-placed hotel; anyone who wants to unwind at the hotel itself may prefer somewhere with more facilities.
Why this position
The same guest score as #10 (9.1), on a smaller body of reviews (983 to 3,353).

Santo Mauro, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Madrid
Madrid, Spain
The Santo Mauro, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Madrid is situated close to Madrid’s Paseo de la Castellana. Free WiFi is available in all areas…
Why this position
Sits behind #11 on both the score (9.0 to 9.1) and the sample it rests on (109 to 983 reviews).

Wellington Hotel & Spa Madrid
Madrid, Spain
Wellington Hotel & Spa Madrid suits travellers who want an elegant base in Salamanca with green space on the doorstep… Retiro Park is 100 metres away, and the hotel adds an outdoor pool, a spa with sensation showers and a hot tub, a free fitness centre and two restaurants. Guests speak most warmly about the location, the breakfast and staff who handle requests readily, and they describe the hotel as lovely and clean. The main drawbacks concern value and space. Some guests find the rooms on the small side, and the price level is high, which makes the room size more noticeable. The spa is charged separately, so a few hours of relaxation add to the bill, and one guest missed help with luggage at check-in. Travellers who want facilities to come back to after a day in the city will find much to like; those watching their budget or wanting a large room should compare carefully first.
Why this position
Guests on Booking rate it above #12 (9.0 to 9.0), but it has no Google rating yet, which the ranking weighs equally; #12 has 4.7.

Hotel Fénix, a Gran Meliá Hotel - The Leading Hotels of the World
Madrid, Spain
Hotel Fénix, a Gran Meliá Hotel - The Leading Hotels of the World suits travellers who want a classic, polished base in Salamanca… It stands next to Plaza de Colón, and its spacious bedrooms are decorated in a traditional English style, with a pillow menu, bathrobes and slippers in every room. A spa and wellness area, a fitness centre and two restaurants round it off. Guests speak most warmly about the location and the staff, whom they describe as wonderful and welcoming, and they also praise the cleanliness, the comfortable beds and the breakfast. The drawbacks are minor. One guest found the décor a little dated, and service at check-in and breakfast can be slow when the hotel is busy. Views on the restaurant differ: one guest rated the food very good, while another found it fine but not memorable. Travellers who value a central address and attentive staff will feel well looked after; those who want a sleek, modern interior may prefer a more contemporary hotel.
Why this position
The same guest score as #13 (9.0), on a smaller body of reviews (514 to 1,139).

How we chose these hotels
At our latest review (August 2026) the properties listed above were measured against the same standard: sustained guest scores on both Booking.com and Google (weighted by how many reviews sit behind them), five-star class or an equivalent premium level, a genuinely first-rate location, and facilities that set the hotel apart.
As a guideline we look for around 8.5 or higher on Booking.com, but no single number decides on its own. When the sources disagree, the broader evidence wins. Guest scores on this page update continuously, and the selection is re-reviewed at regular intervals. The full standard is described in how we choose hotels.
