Affordable luxuryLiseberg Grand Curiosa Hotel is designed with families in mind… It stands on Herman Lindholms Torg, less than 1 km from the Liseberg amusement park, with trams, attractions and the city centre within easy reach. Guests love the steampunk theme that runs through the building, and parents describe the stay as magical for children: family rooms include a special area for the kids, and there is an indoor play area, three restaurants, a coffee shop, a bar, live music and a fitness centre. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and helpful, and the hotel as clean and well kept, even dressed up for seasonal occasions. The points to watch are practical. Liseberg does not open all year, and a few guests arrived to find the park closed, so it is worth checking opening dates before you book. Breakfast can get busy, and some found the beds too soft. For families heading to Liseberg, it is a fun and well-placed choice.

DesignAvalon Hotel is for travellers who want to step out of the door into the heart of Gothenburg… It stands on Kungstorget by Kungsportsplatsen, with the canal and the main shopping streets right outside, and it has a strong design identity: rooms arranged by Feng Shui principles, art throughout the building and, from May to September, a heated rooftop pool with views over the city. Guests also single out the breakfast and the comfortable beds. The central position has a downside. The hotel is surrounded by bars and a nightclub, and at weekends music can be heard late into the night in rooms facing the street. The entry-level rooms are compact, and the open bathroom designs, with glass doors or a bath in the room, give little privacy. Choose a larger room on a higher floor at the back and it makes a stylish city base; if you need silence, look further from the square.
