The Inside House
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Best overallThe Inside House is for travellers who want a small, carefully run hotel with the Old City of Chiang Mai on the doorstep… The building has the feel of a colonial manor house, arranged around a quiet courtyard with a pool, a restaurant and a spa, and guests say the temples, cafés and markets are mostly within a short walk. What they talk about most is the service: staff who remember names, notice birthdays and serve afternoon tea every day of the stay, along with a breakfast that covers almost any diet. The boutique scale is also the limit. There is no gym and little to do on site beyond the pool, the spa and the restaurant, and the rooms without a private pool are on the compact side. A few guests noted small lapses, such as weak hot water or light in the room at night. Couples who plan to spend their days exploring will find it a charming base; anyone after resort facilities will be happier elsewhere.
Why this position
Highest guest score of the 10 hotels we rank here: 9.7 from 538 reviews. Leads the ranking: a higher guest score than #2 (9.7 to 9.4).

Ping Nakara Boutique Hotel And Spa
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Spa & wellnessPing Nakara Boutique Hotel And Spa is for travellers who prefer a small, characterful house to a large resort… The colonial-style building is full of hand-crafted detail, and guests return again and again to how elegant it feels. The service is what they talk about most: staff who remember breakfast orders, offer drinks and snacks and make the stay feel like a home. A breakfast with dishes cooked to order, the Nakara Spa and an outdoor pool round out the stay, and the Night Bazaar is a five-minute walk away. The intimate scale brings a few limits. Dinner at the hotel needs to be booked a day ahead, and some guests found a taxi the easiest way to reach the Old City. Some guests also mention dim bathroom lighting and fiddly air-conditioning controls. Couples who want a calm, well-looked-after base with period charm will feel at home here; anyone who wants spontaneous evenings at the hotel may prefer a bigger property.
Why this position
Sits behind #1 on both the score (9.4 to 9.7) and the sample it rests on (392 to 538 reviews).

Raya Heritage
Chiang Mai, Thailand
DesignRaya Heritage is for travellers who want calm, beauty and privacy on the edge of Chiang Mai… It sits directly on the Ping River among lush gardens, and guests are struck first by the architecture, from the stunning lobby to the thoughtfully composed heritage décor. They write most warmly about the staff, whose care and attention to detail come up in almost every review, the beautiful, comfortable rooms and the à la carte breakfast at Khu Khao, which guests describe as simply amazing. The criticism is more about setting and dinner than service. Guests put the city centre about 25 minutes away by car and find little to walk to, insects gather on the riverside balconies at night, and several found the evening food less convincing than breakfast. Couples who want a peaceful, design-led retreat will be well looked after; travellers who want to stroll out to markets and restaurants are better placed in town.
Why this position
Among the three highest guest scores of the 10 hotels we rank here: 9.5 from 158 reviews. Scores higher than #2 (9.5 to 9.4), on a smaller body of reviews (158 to 392).

Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai is for travellers who want to swap the city for rice paddies and mountain views… It lies in the Mae Rim Valley, with bungalows full of Siamese art and teak, pool villas and residences, a spa, a pool with a view and the Terraces Restaurant looking towards Doi Suthep. Guests describe it as a paradise in the jungle and praise above all the staff, who are attentive without being overbearing, the immaculate grounds and the food, with complimentary activities such as buffalo bathing adding to the stay. Criticism is scarce. One guest was kept awake by the sounds of animals at night, another found the main pool very cold, and spending on site adds up, with yoga, cooking classes and babysitting all charged extra. Couples who want calm, nature and polished service will find what they came for; travellers who want to step out into Chiang Mai's streets every evening are better placed in town.
Why this position
Among the three highest guest scores of the 10 hotels we rank here: 9.5 from 156 reviews. Level with #3 on the guest score (9.5) and on the reviews behind it.

Rarin Jinda Wellness Spa Resort
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Peace and quietRarin Jinda Wellness Spa Resort is for travellers who want a restful, spa-centred stay without leaving the city… It sits on the Ping River in Wat Ket, with grounds guests call an oasis, two pools and a spa that adds a hydrotherapy pool and an onsen to its treatments. The rooms are spacious, furnished in a modern Thai style and fitted with a terrace and a bathtub, and the Night Bazaar is a 10-minute walk away. What guests praise most is the service, which they call Thai hospitality at its most attentive, followed by the spa and the breakfast. The weak points are practical. The resort sits off a busy road, a few rooms felt humid or had a drain smell at night, and the gym leaves room for improvement. One guest also found children in the adults-only onsen. Couples who come for the spa and the calm will be well cared for; anyone who needs a cool, dry room or a serious workout should look elsewhere.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #4 (945 to 156), at a slightly lower score (9.3 to 9.5).

Chiang Mai Marriott Hotel
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Chiang Mai Marriott Hotel is for travellers who want a full-service international hotel in the middle of things… It stands in the Night Bazaar district, so the markets and restaurants are on the doorstep and Tha Phae Gate and the Old City are about 1 km away, and with 22 floors every room looks out over the city or the mountains. Guests speak most warmly about the staff, the varied breakfast and the comfortable rooms, and those on the club floors rate the M Club lounge highly. Families appreciate the pool and the family rooms. The size has a flip side. The pool gets busy with children in the afternoons, extras such as laundry and in-room snacks are on the expensive side, and the decor is more international than local. A few guests also had trouble with shower temperatures. Families and travellers who value convenience and service will be well looked after; anyone seeking an intimate house with Lanna character should look at the smaller hotels in town.
Why this position
The same guest score as #5 (9.3), on a smaller body of reviews (698 to 945).

RatiLanna Riverside Spa Resort
Chiang Mai, Thailand
RatiLanna Riverside Spa Resort is for travellers who want a quiet, resort-style stay close to the centre of Chiang Mai… It sits on the Mae Ping River, built in Lanna style around gardens, ponds and a 480 m² infinity pool with a swim-up bar, and the rooms pair wood with traditional Thai décor. Guests talk most about the staff, who they describe as thoughtful and generous with recommendations, followed by the spa, the clean and comfortable rooms and a breakfast with a chef cooking to order. The riverside position is also the main trade-off. The Old City is a ride away rather than a walk, although a free shuttle runs to the Night Bazaar and taxis are quick. The water brings mosquitoes, and a few guests noticed worn furniture or too few loungers in the sun. Couples and spa-goers who want calm after a day in town will be well looked after; those who prefer to step out into the old lanes should stay inside the walls.
Why this position
Level with #6 on the guest score (9.3) and on the reviews behind it.

Villa Mahabhirom
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Villa Mahabhirom is for travellers who want somewhere with a sense of place rather than a standard resort… Hidden off a side street in Suthep, it is laid out like a small village of traditional Thai buildings, filled with antiques and set in gardens around an outdoor pool. Guests describe it as tranquil and timeless, and the staff are what they praise above all: attentive, kind and ready to turn a birthday into an occasion. The pool villas add privacy, and Nimman Haemin is only 2.2 km away. The location has one clear drawback. The airport is 4.4 km away, and several guests hear planes during the day, although most say the evenings are quiet. The spa is modest, the pool is shallow and a few rooms show small signs of wear. Couples who want calm, character and personal service will find it hard to fault; light sleepers who are bothered by aircraft noise may prefer a hotel further from the runway.
Why this position
Scores higher than #7 (9.4 to 9.3), on a smaller body of reviews (124 to 661).

Siri Village Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Siri Village Chiang Mai is for travellers who want the Old City on their doorstep without its noise… The hotel sits near Wat Phra Singh, a few minutes on foot from the Sunday Walking Street market, yet guests describe stepping off the busy streets into a quiet, green oasis. Stylish, immaculate rooms with a balcony, a garden pool, a spa and free bicycles make it an easy base, and the staff are praised in almost every review for being warm and quick to help, down to decorating rooms for birthdays. The weak spot is food. Breakfast draws the most criticism for its limited choice, and one guest found nowhere at the hotel to eat dinner, so evenings are best spent in the surrounding streets. The gym is small and the pool can feel cold. Couples who want to walk out to temples and markets and return to calm will find it a very comfortable choice; anyone who plans most meals at the hotel may want a larger property.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #8 (200 to 124), at a slightly lower score (9.3 to 9.4).

Rachamankha Hotel
Chiang Mai, Thailand
Rachamankha Hotel is for travellers who want a calm, beautifully designed retreat inside Chiang Mai's Old City… It sits by the old city wall, 100 metres from the Sunday Market, yet guests describe it again and again as an oasis: a house of courtyards, gardens and quiet corners, with art and antiques wherever you look. The staff are described as attentive and courteous, breakfast is served from a menu in the courtyard, and the pool area and the library are the places guests most like to linger. The same stillness will not suit everyone. Some guests found the atmosphere hushed and a little formal, with not much happening at the pool or the bar. Rooms can be on the small side, one guest missed a view from the windows, and mosquitoes are part of life in the gardens. Couples who value design and peace will find a calm retreat in the old town; travellers who want buzz and views should look elsewhere.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #9 (254 to 200), at a slightly lower score (9.0 to 9.3).
