Layana Resort & Spa
Koh Lanta, Thailand
Best overallLayana Resort & Spa is built for couples who want the beach and very little else… It is an adults-only hotel for guests aged 18 and over on Long Beach, Koh Lanta, and the pools sit just above the sand, so the day moves easily between a lounger, the water and the spa. The resort faces west, which makes the sunset the evening ritual, and guests come back to the same points again and again: kind, attentive staff, a strong breakfast and grounds that are kept spotless. The calm comes with a few trade-offs. Krabi International Airport is 77 km away, and outside the high season Koh Lanta is a very quiet island, so this is not a base for nightlife. Some guests found the spa expensive for what it offered, and the rooms are not fully soundproof. Couples, honeymooners and anyone marking an occasion will find a peaceful, well-run beach resort; families with children need to look elsewhere.
Why this position
Among the three highest guest scores of the 10 hotels we rank here: 9.6 from 741 reviews. Leads the ranking: a higher guest score than #2 (9.6 to 9.0).

Rawi Warin Resort & Spa
Koh Lanta, Thailand
ViewsRawi Warin Resort & Spa is a large five-star resort for travellers who want everything in one place… It covers a hillside above Klong Toab Bay with four pools, a spa, several places to eat and gardens full of wildlife, and the views from the upper levels are the first thing many guests mention. The staff are just as central: warm, quick to help and consistently praised by guests, along with a generous breakfast and a welcome for children of all ages. The size does have its drawbacks. The grounds are steep, so getting to the upper rooms means either a long walk in the heat or waiting for the shuttle car, and some standard rooms high up have little view. Eating in is expensive by local standards, and the beach is pleasant rather than spectacular. Families and couples who plan to stay on site will find a well-run base; those who want a small, quiet hideaway are better off elsewhere.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #1 (920 to 741), at a slightly lower score (9.0 to 9.6).

Avani+ Koh Lanta Krabi Resort
Koh Lanta, Thailand
Private poolAvani+ Koh Lanta Krabi Resort is built for guests who want to settle in and stay put… It spreads across a green hillside above Koh Kwang Beach, so the sea and the evening sunsets frame much of the day, and two pools, a private beach area, a spa and villas with their own pool keep everything within the resort. Guests speak most warmly about the staff, the spacious rooms and the calm of the grounds, where hornbills nest in the trees. The setting also brings the main trade-offs. The slope is steep, so getting between room, restaurant and beach often means calling a buggy, and there is little within walking distance outside the gates. Several guests found the menus limited on a longer stay. Couples and travellers who want quiet days and a view will feel at home; anyone hoping to stroll out to restaurants in the evening will be happier in a livelier part of the island.
Why this position
Sits behind #2 on both the score (8.7 to 9.0) and the sample it rests on (497 to 920 reviews).

Lanta Palace Beach Resort & Spa
Koh Lanta, Thailand
Affordable luxuryLanta Palace Beach Resort & Spa is a small adults-only hotel for guests aged 18 and over on Klong Toab Beach, and much of its appeal lies in its size… The bungalows sit in carefully kept gardens that lead to the pool and an almost private stretch of sand, and the staff greet guests by name. Guests return to the same points: attentive but unobtrusive service, a breakfast that guests look forward to and a beach restaurant that serves good Thai food close to the water. The quiet setting has a flip side, however. There is little to walk to beyond the beach and Klong Nin nearby, and Krabi International Airport is 84 km away. Prices are high for Thailand, and a few details, from the hairdryer to the Wi-Fi, lag behind the rest. Couples and honeymooners who plan to stay put will find a calm, personal resort; families with children cannot stay here.
Why this position
Highest guest score of the 10 hotels we rank here: 9.7 from 617 reviews. A lower star class than #3, but guests rate it higher (9.7 to 8.7).

Alanta Private Pool Villa
Koh Lanta, Thailand
Peace and quietAlanta Private Pool Villa is less a hotel than a set of private homes near Klong Khong on Koh Lanta's west coast… Each villa is built from natural materials and comes with its own pool, a kitchen, a separate living room and a semi-outdoor bathroom, and guests repeatedly describe the place as peaceful and secluded, an escape from the rest of the world. The staff earn as much praise as the villas: they arrange food delivery, laundry, transport and sightseeing trips, and the villas are kept spotlessly clean. The natural setting has a flip side. Monkeys live nearby and have learned to open bins and even fridges, so food needs to be stored carefully, and insects come with the open-air design. The beach is about 300 metres away rather than outside the door, and Saladan is 5 km off. Couples and small groups who want space and privacy will feel at home; travellers looking for a lively resort atmosphere are better served elsewhere.
Why this position
A 4-star hotel scoring 9.6 from 320 reviews: the guest verdict outweighs the star class. Sits behind #4 on both the score (9.6 to 9.7) and the sample it rests on (320 to 617 reviews).

The Lazy Lodge
Koh Lanta, Thailand
The Lazy Lodge lives up to its name… This small collection of bungalows sits among tropical trees at Klong Khong Beach near Saladan, and guests keep coming back to the same words: relaxed, chilled and quiet. The staff are described as incredibly kind, the restaurant cooks Thai, Asian and European dishes that guests single out, and the bar, the pool and the sunsets complete the picture. With only a small number of guests, it feels more like a hideaway than a resort. The drawbacks lie mostly beyond the lodge's control. Plastic and other rubbish washed in on the tide can litter the beach, and in low season the beach can be hard to use, so the pool does more of the work. Inside, a few guests mention plumbing quirks, such as no hot water at the bathroom sink or an unpleasant smell when the shower is turned on, and the seating around the lodge is not very comfortable. Couples after an unhurried beach stay will feel at home here.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #5 (503 to 320), at a slightly lower score (9.3 to 9.6).

Thai Island Dream Estate
Koh Lanta, Thailand
BeachThai Island Dream Estate sits directly on Klong Nin Beach on Koh Lanta's west coast, and the sea is the reason guests book it… The beachfront villas have their own pools, the two-bedroom beach apartments have fully equipped kitchens, and balconies look out over the pool and the water. Guests write about waking up to the view, walking straight into the sea and sleeping well in quiet surroundings. The staff are praised for sorting out taxis, laundry, bookings and restaurant tips, the nearby village is within walking distance, and in low season some guests have had the place almost to themselves. A few practical details hold it back. Some bathrooms are showing their age, mosquitoes can get in when doors are left open, and the living area is not always air-conditioned. Kantiang Bay is a 20-minute drive away and Krabi Airport about 2.5 hours. Couples and families who want a private pool by the sea will find little to fault; anyone expecting polished hotel finishes may notice the wear.
Why this position
Level with #6 on the guest score (9.3) and on the reviews behind it.

Treeya Lanta
Koh Lanta, Thailand
Treeya Lanta is for travellers who prefer a small, personal hotel to a big resort… Its bungalows and villas are tucked into a lush tropical garden near Long Beach, so the mornings start with the sounds of wildlife and the day can move between the pool, the veranda and the beach a couple of minutes away. Guests speak most warmly about the staff, who are described as unusually attentive, the chic and spotless rooms and a freshly baked breakfast with plenty of fresh fruit. The trade-offs come with the setting. The nearest stretch of beach is rocky, and the main sandy part is easiest to reach at low tide. Insects and early-rising cockerels are part of the jungle feel, and the bar and kitchen close early, though there are restaurants nearby. Couples and independent travellers who want a calm, well-run base near the beach will be happy here; anyone looking for a spa or full resort facilities should look elsewhere.
Why this position
Level with #7 on the guest score (9.3) and on the reviews behind it.

The Houben
Koh Lanta, Thailand
Spa & wellnessThe Houben is a small adults-only boutique hotel for guests aged 18 and over, perched on the hill above Ba Kantiang Bay… The infinity pool and most rooms look out over the Andaman Sea towards the sunset, and the rooms themselves are large, spotless and fitted with generous balconies. What guests remember most, however, is the staff: warm, attentive and personal enough that many say they felt like part of a family. Breakfast and happy-hour cocktails round off the picture. The setting has a physical cost. There are many steps between the road, the rooms and the pool, which makes the hotel a poor fit for anyone with limited mobility. Some bathrooms are open-plan with no door on the toilet, and dinner service can be slow on busy evenings. Couples who want a quiet base with views, and the beach a short walk away, will feel at home; families with children cannot stay.
Why this position
Sits behind #8 on both the score (9.1 to 9.3) and the sample it rests on (353 to 607 reviews).

Twin Lotus Resort & Spa
Koh Lanta, Thailand
Twin Lotus Resort & Spa is made for slow days by the sea… It opens directly onto Klong Dao Beach, and its spacious tropical gardens, three pools and villas with their own plunge pool keep the mood calm even when the resort is full. Guests speak most warmly about the staff, the breakfast and the stylish rooms, and the daily happy hour by the pool is a well-loved ritual. From November to April the resort takes adults only, which suits the couples and honeymooners it is aimed at. The trade-offs lie in the details. Some guests found the rooms, pools and sunbeds in need of maintenance and the gym basic, and the wifi can be slow or patchy. A few villas have open-air bathrooms, and the evenings bring mosquitoes. Couples looking for a peaceful beach base will feel well looked after; anyone who expects everything to feel brand new may notice the wear.
Why this position
Rests on more guest reviews than #9 (469 to 353), at a slightly lower score (9.0 to 9.1).
