In short: We went through more than forty hotels in the Algarve and listed five that call themselves adults-only on their own websites. Four are in or near Albufeira, in the old town and by the beaches at Galé, Oura and Falésia, and one is a wellness hotel on a hillside above Alvor, near Portimão.
The Algarve's luxury adults-only hotels gather in and around Albufeira: a boutique hotel in the lanes of the old town, small hotels near the beaches at Galé and Oura, and a garden hotel inland from the cliffs of Praia da Falésia.
One more stands on a hillside above the old fishing village of Alvor, further west, where the days turn on a spa, yoga and a pool on the roof.

1Vila Origens Urban Beach Retreat Albufeira Adults Only
Algarve, Portugal
Why this rank: A small boutique hotel on a lane in Albufeira's old town, a few steps from Praia do Peneco, whose own website says it accepts only adults aged 16 and over; there are no cots or extra beds. The outdoor pool, ringed by cabanas, is open all year, and the wellness area has a hot tub, sauna and steam room, with yoga sessions on offer. Guests praise staff who go out of their way and a generous, beautifully presented breakfast. There is no restaurant for dinner, and nightlife can be heard at times.
2Vila Galé Collection Praia
Algarve, Portugal
Why this rank: A 40-room hotel about 150 metres from Galé Beach, west of central Albufeira, that its own website reserves for guests over 16. Balconies look over a pool in a palm garden, Spa Satsanga adds an indoor pool, sauna and treatments, and the Inevitável restaurant serves à la carte. Guests praise warm, personal staff, spotless rooms and a breakfast with an omelette station. The spa is modest, and the hotel closes over the winter.
3Falésia Hotel - Adults Only
Algarve, Portugal
Why this rank: Set among gardens and small lakes between Albufeira and Vilamoura, this hotel describes itself on its own website as a retreat exclusively for adults; booking sites give 18 as the minimum age. A large outdoor pool, a heated indoor pool open around the clock and the Ambar Spa with yoga keep the pace slow, and a free shuttle reaches Praia da Falésia in about five minutes. Guests praise the calm, attentive staff and spacious rooms with balconies. On longer stays the dinner buffet can feel repetitive.
4Longevity Health & Wellness Hotel - Adults Only
Algarve, Portugal
Why this rank: A five-star wellness hotel on a hillside above Alvor, looking over the bay, that presents itself on its own website as an adults-only retreat; booking sites set the minimum age at 18. The spa has detox and hydrothermal circuits, a rooftop infinity pool is joined by a heated indoor pool, and a daily programme of yoga, pilates and walks runs alongside its wellness programmes. Guests praise the quiet, attentive staff and breakfast with sea views on the roof. Group classes cost extra, and the spa closes early.
5Vila Maria Hotel - Adults Only
Algarve, Portugal
Why this rank: A small four-star at Pedra dos Bicos, a few minutes' walk from Praia da Oura, east of Albufeira's old town. Its operator's website names it an adults-only hotel, kept for adults to preserve a calm atmosphere; it gives no exact age, and children are not accepted. The rooftop infinity pool looks out to sea and hosts yoga at sunrise and sunset. Guests praise friendly staff and bright, modern rooms, though the pool deck is small, some bathrooms are open-plan and the hotel closes in winter.

How we chose and ordered the hotels
We went through more than forty hotels along the Algarve coast, from Lagos and Sagres in the west to Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António near the Spanish border. Five made the list. They are ordered by guest score, which decides the order and nothing else; we do not print it.
Five is a short list for a coast this popular, and we chose it over a longer list with a lower bar. The Algarve simply has few hotels that are truly adults-only at this level. Many market themselves as "adults-friendly" or "recommended for adults" with no age rule behind the label, and several family resorts sell adults-only rooms, pools or areas while their kids' clubs carry on elsewhere in the grounds. None of those are here, and the section further down gives examples. Three of the five are four-star and Longevity in Alvor is five-star. For Vila Origens we found no official star rating, so we give none; it is a small boutique hotel with a wellness area and a pool that is open all year.
Every hotel had to say on its own website that it is adults-only. Booking sites were used for one thing only: the minimum age, where the hotel's own pages do not give one. Vila Maria publishes no exact age, so we give none for it. To qualify, a hotel had to turn away guests under 16 or apply an explicit adults-only policy to the whole property. An age limit of 12, 13 or 14 is not enough, and adults-only areas inside family hotels do not count.
Where to stay: Albufeira or Alvor?
Albufeira's old town suits you if you want to walk everywhere. Vila Origens sits in its lanes a few steps from Praia do Peneco, with the old town square, restaurants and bars around the corner. That convenience comes at a cost after dark, however: on summer evenings the old town stays busy until late, so light sleepers should ask for a quiet room.
The beaches on either side of town have three of the hotels. West of Albufeira, Praia da Galé is a long sandy beach with a calmer feel than the beaches in the centre, and Vila Galé Collection Praia stands about 150 metres from it. East of the old town, Vila Maria is a few minutes' walk from Praia da Oura, a livelier stretch with plenty of places to eat. Further east, towards Vilamoura, the Falésia Hotel lies in gardens inland from Praia da Falésia, the long beach beneath red and ochre cliffs, and runs a free shuttle down to the sand. From the hotels in Albufeira it is roughly 40 to 50 km to Faro Airport.
Alvor, just west of Portimão, is a former fishing village on the Ria de Alvor lagoon, with a long sandy beach and boardwalks through the dunes. Longevity stands on a hillside above the village with views over the bay, about a kilometre from Alvor Beach. It is a quieter base than Albufeira and closer to Lagos and the western Algarve, but further from Faro, at around 70 km. Pick Alvor for a wellness week, and Albufeira if you want the beach and the evening both within walking distance.
Some couples split their week, with a few days of spa and yoga in Alvor and the rest by the beach in Albufeira, which is less than an hour away along the coast by car. That means two separate bookings, and our Hotels.com savings guide shows how to bring down the cost of each.
Planning a family trip another year, or want a wider choice? Our page on luxury hotels in the Algarve covers the coast's family resorts too, and luxury hotels in Portugal carries on to Lisbon, Porto and Madeira.
Hotels we reviewed but left out
- Vila Vita Parc and Conrad Algarve: family resorts with clubs for children.
- Octant Vila Monte: an adults-only area inside a hotel that welcomes families as well.
- PortoBay Blue Ocean (formerly TUI BLUE Falesia) at Olhos de Água: it sells adults-only sea-view rooms, but has a children's pool and a babysitting service.
- Bela Vista Hotel & Spa at Praia da Rocha: it calls itself adults-oriented and not recommended for children, but has no rule that keeps them out.
- AP Maria Nova Lounge in Tavira and AP Oriental Beach at Praia da Rocha: "adults-friendly" hotels where the minimum age is a recommendation, not a rule.
- Aqua Pedra dos Bicos Design Beach Hotel in Albufeira: adult-friendly, but by its own website not strictly adults-only.
- Jupiter Marina Hotel – Couples & Spa in Portimão: aimed at couples, but its age rule covers only the spa and the gym.
- AP Cabanas Beach & Nature and Lagos Avenida Hotel: guests from 14 and 13 respectively.
- Boa Vista Hotel & Spa in Albufeira: adults-only, but below our guest-score floor.
In the Algarve, the words to read twice are "adults-friendly" and "adults-oriented". They describe the mood a hotel hopes for rather than a rule at the door, so check the age policy before you book. The five hotels above keep the whole property for adults and say so in their own words.
